Marco Tapia

Managing Director

PicNet founder and Managing Director, responsible for the overall strategic direction of the company and its business development.

Marco has 30 years of experience as Company Director, CIO, Business Technology Consultant and IT Project Manager. He has managed large and medium size IT functions for national and international corporations and in particular has consulted in the best use of technology across the logistics and the pharmaceutical sector.

Some of his Business Technology consulting activities include supply chain projects for Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, Business Intelligence projects for Pfizer Australia, strategic planning of IT infrastructure for Sydney Ports Corporation, Defence Maritime Services, e-business consulting for P&O Ports, software development projects for Pfizer Australia and others.

Before starting in PicNet in 2002, and for six years he was the global CIO for P&O Ports. In this role, Marco contributed to the formulation and implementation of new Business Technology strategies for P&O Ports, which included the deployment of large IT solutions in many countries across all continents. These solutions involved large IT infrastructure, ERP systems, port management solutions and e-business applications.

During this time he also negotiated large IT contracts and completed IT and business due-diligences in many countries around the world. Specific projects included strategic plan for P&O Ports to support rapid global expansion, IT strategy for new USA operations, Indian and European facilities.

Prior to joining P&O Ports, and for 9 years, Marco was IT Manager of the pharmaceutical company Wellcome Australia Limited (later renamed Glaxo Wellcome) and before that, IT Director for the National Bureau of Statistics in Chile.

Marco holds an MBA from the University of NSW, a BSc (Electronics), a Diploma in Systems Analysis and he is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

He and his company PicNet have presented at numerous conferences and seminars including The Australian Financial Review CIO conferences and the Terminal Operating Conferences. He is consulted on a regular basis by a number of business technology publications and has featured a number of times in the MIS magazine plus the Australian and US CIO magazine and Computerworld.
